My mom is the same way – she’s a seamstress and charges me the cost of materials for anything I need. She doesn’t charge me for the clothes she makes me, though, as I’m basically a walking billboard for her business. I never ask for free, especially knowing how much work she puts into it. Same as OP and the work she puts in to be an MUA.

Unfortunately, some idiot thought it was a good idea to make bubble wrap that doesn’t pop and some businesses are starting to use it. It’s no problem. I have only ever offered to be a practice model if a friend requests it, and any of their time and skill used on me outside of that will be paid for. But I never ever ask for it. I’ve had far too many friends work in freelance fields such as beauty get stiffed even in trades for artwork. It’s a cutthroat business and if you want to support your friends and family, do it with money and social media marketing. Show off their work and brag to people who ask for recommendations! Bring them business, don’t cost them product/money! If I see a friend and they hook me up, I give them an Official I’m The Type Person That Will Ask Crap Shirt. You’re supposed to SUPPORT the people in your life.. not see what you can get out of them. Its quite directly pulling the mask off their attitude, because a lot of people feel weird about charging/paying a family for work, but won’t have a problem with the idea “free” meal.
