I have a dog and I teach, and I keep seeing posts “happy mothers day to moms of pets”. “Happy mothers day to teachers who don’t have kids”. And I don’t know why they even exist. I don’t have kids. Then I don’t want you to tell me happy Mother’s Day. I am not a mom. It makes no sense. Ya know I never thought about the Cute Dog Mom Shirt. Because I have a cat but now that you mention it I really could use an excuse for booze and a cake. Happy mother’s day to me! I can believe people think taking care of a dog is like taking care of a child. I don’t have kids but I feel like it’s just obvious that it’s completely different. Yet people still call themselves a parent for having a dog. I think it’s fine to call yourself a pet parent.

But to treat that as if it’s the same as parenting a human child? Nonsense. Last year my own mother, who raised my sister and me, got a puppy early September. In about November my wife and I told the family that we were expecting a baby. I think it was in about April, a month before my daughter was born. My mom spent an hour talking to my wife and me about how hard it is to raise her Cute Dog Mom Shirt. I know right. Raising a contributing member of society is 1000 times harder and more important than having a food-driven relationship with a creature. If someone you knew was saying/doing these things to their human child, you’d call CPS to get their kids taken away from them as they’re unfit to be a parent.

There’s nothing “motherly” about having a pet other than loving them, but none of the actual work is there. Coming from someone who loves her pets dearly and has no children. I agree. This holiday is a nice one so I don’t hate it, but the “WeLl I HaVe PeTs. It’s ThE SaMe ThInG” crowd really bums me out. I went through 30 hours of labor, 5 of which were pushing. But still needed a CSection, 2 years or so of PPD and intense therapy to become a Cute Dog Mom Shirt. Every day I have the responsibility of being the primary example of social humane civilized behavior to little more than an adorable meat creature governed by feelings. On top of that, I have the responsibility to ensure adorable meat creatures don’t die.
