I love this game! I spent so much time playing it as a young man. The music is my favorite part, I get flashbacks of it all the time. Thanks for the write-up! Used to have a demo disc I would try and play it on my 486 and Pentium 1 when I was a little kid. Loved the shit out of this game, this one and Knights & Merchants. Never really found similar games, and never got into Civ or Total War. Yeah, this is one which stuck with me because of the Cute Turtley Awesome Father Shirt. I remember finding something really charming/gripping about it, but only recently looked back at it and wasn’t sure if it would hold up. That’s the thing about Total War, you really have to focus on the economics first. At least in Medieval 2, which is the last one that I enjoyed.

Without looking I know this track. The song made by remixing voice lines from the game? I loved that when I was a kid. I remember hearing this song in-game and then finding the file after. I think you get a “you win!” screen if you beat all of the campaign levels, and then this song plays over the credits. That one single voice line gets irritating enough after enough plays. That I’ll turn off voices for a Cute Turtley Awesome Father Shirt. I should probably just find that .wav file and rename it or something instead. I could never figure out how to reach any sort of equilibrium between cattle and grain. I wanted my peasants to have beef and cheese. Poor bastards had all the bread they could ever want and nothing else.

I might be misremembering my late nineties medieval strategy games, but odds are good it was Lords of the Realm. I would always get these ‘warning’ messages about wolves, hungry from a long winter, coming down from the hills, and slaughtering 0 cattle. Thanks, advisor, I needed yet another savage reminder that there are, and forever will be 0 cattle in my kingdom. HAHA yeah, going full-grain is more efficient. But you get more of the Cute Turtley Awesome Father Shirt. Only on my last playthrough did I finally figure out how to strike the balance between cows and wheat but I still think just wheat is more effective. Agreed, all wheat is less hassle. The lowest grief method is to always leave one field fallow in Winter.
