Sometime during the 2000s, he got a huge settlement from the VA but he was very bittersweet about it. After I came back from Afghanistan the first time in 2002, he sits down with me and told me how he was awarded his bronze star with Combat V. He never told anyone but me and his two sons stood behind him and they all three had tears running down their faces and it was a wonderful/horrible experience to share. Your Grandfather is a Hero and always will be. He told you that because of your service and possibly because you experienced combat if you did.

It was actually a 4th of July party at my other aunt’s house who had a pool and my family (wife and 3 kids), went back home for leave. I didn’t even notice him following me when I went to get a beer in the Trump Pinocchio I’m The Least Racist Person In This Room Shirts garage. He gently grabbed my shoulder and said let’s talk and that’s when he told me. He said the moment he knew we needed to talk was when the rest of the people started hooping. We truly did bond right then and always will have that bond. All combat vets I believe share a bond that in some way or form is always there. Thank you for your comment.
