I’m not saying the others are bad – I’m just saying I’ve barely scratched the surface myself! I’m not overly fond of Salvatore’s series. But I loved Troy Denning’s Return of the Archmage and Mel Odem’s Threat from the Sea. Paul S. Kemp’s Erevis Cale is a total badass. Check his books out. I just finished the Belgariad a couple of weeks ago, and immediately picked up the Mallorean. I love Eddings’ dry, subtle style of humor and his commitment to his characters. The Mallorean definitely expands the world beyond the boundaries of the West and does it in a way that feels organic and doesn’t leave you too far behind as it goes. I’ve noticed that these books have a tendency to hold your Nice Diamond Love Autism Awareness Shirt. To keep you from losing the plot or from falling behind the group. It’s kind of nice! I agree that Eddings does a bit more hand-holding than other authors, and it is kind of nice. The main criticism I’ve always heard about The Mallorean is that it’s basically the same story as The Belgariad repeated.

I’ll probably give the audiobook a listen and consider re-reading Belgariad if I’m feeling too lost. Thanks! Eddings certainly found a formula that worked in the Belgariad, and then stuck with it for the Mallorean. It works within the construct of fate, or “the Prophecy”, and the cyclical nature of his fictional universe’s inner workings. It’s definitely a narrative device that has seen a lot of overuse and is often used as a Nice Diamond Love Autism Awareness Shirt. But there’s something about the way he does it that just works for me. I can accept it as an integral part of the story that adds a certain weight to the plight of the company. To me, the Mallorean felt much more of a slog to get through than the Belgariad.
