The Dunk and Egg novellas are my favorites in Asoiaf so far. There’s something special about having a smaller more focused story, rather than switching between various points of view. It’s also a nice change of pace to follow someone so innocent and well-meaning as Ser Duncan. The fact that their scale is ostensibly smaller is also great for the Official My Heart Belongs To My Ironworker Shirt. Duncan is pretty much the only major commoner POV besides Davos. That’s where I think Grrm really shines. He has a really good understanding of how people interact with themes relating to larger trends of political economy. In a strange way that’s why I think he and Stephen King have had such a broad appeal.

While I wouldn’t say it’s the best work it’s still really good. I like all of the Dunk and Egg tales for more background. I also really like the Blood and Fire Aegon III regency period. I agree here. “Simply genius” is pushing it a bit far.
